Kinda
Tom Hogue October 2016

Doesn't that word just annoy the heck out of me. Sometimes I'll be talking to someone who uses this phrase quite regularly in their daily vocabulary. While I suppose it's better than profanity, in many ways it annoys me even more.
Kinda = kind of...
Oh, what is that?!
When I hear it in a phrase such as, "well, we're going to kinda roll this project out, I think with three people, and…"
Or "Have you finished your homework?" Response, "Kinda"
To me, that word provides a poor camouflage to the more accurate answer of incompleteness , uncertainty, or doubt.
I can often replace that word "kinda" with "nope", or "I'm not certain what I'm going to do here", or "I haven't planned at all."
So naturally, being the perfectionist that I am, that word just sits in my craw and irritates me to no end. I'd rather get right to it that someone still has something to do and that their approach is determined to recover from their failure. To me failure is not always a bad thing, it gives us a launching point from which to improve. But if someone can't admit that they must improve, because they're masking it or softening it, then they will not improve.
Often times I'll reply, "Kinda? Is that a yes or a no?"
I like to say, "you can't be kinda pregnant, or kinda dead. You either are or you aren't. It's either a yes or a no."
Did you perform well on that test? You're grade will reflect that. The answer can't be kinda. Did you perform well in the tournament? Often an award will reflect that but not always. In your heart you will know. There is no kinda.
Kinda is a gray area - not excellence.
Now that you've heard my rantings on this crutch word, watch how it appears in your own life and ask yourself what they're really saying. What is it they are trying to cover with that camouflage word.
It may just annoy the heck out of you too – kinda.
